Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen delivered her first New Year’s speech since taking office, addressing the threats posed by authoritarian regimes like the Chinese Communist Party to the rules-based international order. President Tsai, along with Vice President Lai Ching-te, attended the flag-raising ceremony at the Presidential Office this morning, joined by officials including Premier Su Tseng-chang, Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu, Acting President of the Judicial Yuan Hsieh Ming-yang, President of the Examination Yuan Chou Hong-hsien, Deputy President of the Control Yuan Li Hung-chun, Presidential Office Secretary-General Pan Meng-an, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an, as well as representatives from industrial associations. They sang the national anthem together as the national flag was slowly raised amid the anthem’s melody.
In her address titled “Nurturing National Strength with Democracy, Embracing a New World,” President Tsai stressed the importance of Taiwan’s role in regional security and highlighted the need to enhance the nation’s defense resilience, combat disinformation and cognitive warfare, and collectively resist threats and infiltration from external forces.

She praised Taiwanese athletes and talents for their outstanding contributions that showcase Taiwan’s spirit and culture, instilling pride in all citizens.
