Ford Returns to the Red Sea: Three Aircraft Carriers to Gather in the Middle East Battlefield

The US military is set to have three carrier strike groups carry out missions in the Middle East, forming a rare convergence of naval air power that significantly enhances the US military’s ability to sustain combat, seize air superiority, and control key maritime routes.

On April 20, the US Central Command announced on the social media platform X that sailors conducted flight operations aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier in the Red Sea on April 19. The Ford carrier strike group is currently operating within the responsibility area of the US Central Command, which also released related images.

According to the Associated Press, a defense official revealed that the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, along with the USS Mahan and the USS Winston S. Churchill destroyers, had previously transited the Suez Canal into the Red Sea while in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

The Gerald R. Ford has been deployed at sea since last June and was deployed to the Caribbean region during the US military operations against Venezuela. This state-of-the-art nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has broken the record for the longest carrier deployment since the Vietnam War.

In mid-March, the Ford carrier was forced to make a repair stop in a Croatian port due to a laundry room fire while operating in the waters between Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

With the arrival of the Ford, it becomes the second aircraft carrier deployed by the US military in the Middle East. The first carrier deployed was the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been involved in the US military’s “Operation Enduring Freedom” against Iran.

Another defense official disclosed that the USS George HW Bush aircraft carrier is also sailing towards the Middle East and is currently near the coast of South Africa.

The Bush is expected to arrive in the Middle East in the coming days. At that time, there will be three US aircraft carriers and their strike groups carrying out missions in the region.

A knowledgeable US official told Bloomberg that the Bush carrier, accompanied by multiple Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, departed from Norfolk, Virginia on March 31 and headed to the Middle East for deployment.

While President Trump is seeking negotiations with Iran to reach an agreement that forces Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions, he is also increasing pressure on Iran by expanding military deployments. The deployment of three carrier strike groups enhances the US military’s deterrence capabilities, expands Trump’s military options in the Middle East, and indicates that the US is prepared to rapidly escalate conflict if the security situation deteriorates.
