Manhattan Pokémon card shop robbed at gunpoint, over $100,000 worth of merchandise stolen.

New York City Police Department has stated that a Pokémon card specialty store in Chelsea, Manhattan was robbed at gunpoint on the evening of the 14th. The authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

According to the police, they received a 911 call that three masked men had entered the “Poké Court” store located at 412 West 13th Street in Manhattan to commit the robbery. The suspects were armed with guns and hammers, and they controlled everyone in the store during the robbery.

Store employees told the media that the robbers were carrying anime-style backpacks, and the entire robbery took about three minutes, during which they stole merchandise valued at over $100,000. At the time of the incident, the store was hosting its first-ever community event since its opening, with about 40 customers present.

The store, which opened in November last year, mainly sells Pokémon cards, card accessories, as well as Pokémon-themed lifestyle products and artist creations.

Owner Courtney Chin stated on Thursday that the stolen items were documented in a complete inventory list and she hopes to receive insurance compensation. She also mentioned that the store has an alarm system and they will further confirm with the security company if the equipment is functioning properly.

Courtney Chin stated that the police and nearby businesses have suggested considering hiring armed security guards or doormen in the future to enhance security measures. She emphasized that the incident is not just about the financial loss but also about the initial intention to create a safe space for customers to enjoy their shared interests peacefully, which was disrupted that evening when dozens of customers were threatened at gunpoint.

Furthermore, the police have indicated that similar robbery incidents at collectible card shops have been reported in cities like Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle in the past week, drawing attention to this concerning trend.
