The remnants of Typhoon “Matmo” continue to affect multiple areas in northern Vietnam, causing heavy rain, severe flooding, and landslides. As of Wednesday morning, October 8th, the disaster has resulted in 8 deaths, 5 missing persons, and 5 injuries in the country.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Vietnam, the typhoon has also led to 15,762 houses being flooded, with 402 houses damaged, and 14,621 hectares of rice fields and crops submerged.

The Northern Power Corporation of Vietnam stated that due to the continuous heavy rainfall brought by the typhoon’s circulation, severe flooding, landslides, and road closures have been reported in various areas in northern Vietnam. This has significantly impacted power supply and the daily lives of residents. Provinces heavily affected by the disaster include Taiyuan, Lüeshan, Bắc Ninh, and Cao Bằng.

Meanwhile, the capital city, Hanoi, has also experienced heavy rainfall, with average precipitation ranging from 100 to 180 millimeters and locally heavier downpours, leading to widespread flooding in the city. As a result, several schools have urgently notified students to switch to remote learning from home, while over a thousand flights have been forced to cancel or divert to other airports due to persistent heavy rain and thunderstorms. Currently, relevant departments in Hanoi are working at full capacity to drain the water and address severe flooding in various spots across the city.

Data from the Vietnamese Meteorological Department shows that, as of the morning of the 8th, the water level of the Red River, which runs through the northeastern city of Taiyuan, has surpassed the historical record of 28.81 meters. The National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center in Vietnam predicts that within the next 6 hours, provinces in the north such as Lạng Sơn, Phú Thọ, Lào Cai, and Sơn La may face risks of flash floods, landslides, and other disasters.
