Sichuan veggie patch erupts in fierce blaze, burning for days unabated

On December 28, 2025, a vegetable field in Xujia Town, Peng’an County, Nanchong City, Sichuan Province suddenly caught fire, burning for several days without extinguishing. The cause of the fire was unknown.

According to reports from mainland media such as Sina and The Paper, the place where the fire broke out is located behind the Xujia Primary School’s second campus in Xujia Town.

Video footage circulating on the internet shows that the fire broke out in a vegetable field near Xujia Primary School, surrounded by flames and nearby vegetable plantations, with a white two-story residential building visible not far away.

Local villagers said that when the fire broke out on December 28, 2025, the flames were only about one meter high. By noon on December 30, the flames had soared to over three meters high, and the area on fire was still expanding.

Some villagers stated that despite light rain on December 31, the fire continued to burn.

Villagers speculated that the reason for the prolonged burning of the fire might be due to gas leaking from the soil. Whether this unknown gas is natural gas is still unknown.

Villagers mentioned that several years ago, many areas in Xujia Town had underground natural gas exploration and drilling, so it is unclear whether these unknown gases are leaking through these boreholes.

Personnel from the gas company in Peng’an County’s Xujia Town jurisdiction stated that there was no natural gas pipeline leakage in the area, and the burning gas was from untapped underground natural gas. On the day the fire started, the company had sent staff to the scene for inspection and had notified relevant local authorities.

In response, the Xujia Town government has set up a cordon around the fire site. Personnel from the Natural Resources and Planning Bureau of Peng’an County have arrived on the scene and are currently conducting sampling tests, with the results pending.
