On January 8th, it was officially announced that Wang Mingyan, the former deputy director of the Sports Equipment Center of the General Administration of Sports of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), is suspected of serious violation of discipline and law, and is currently under investigation.
Public information reveals that Wang Mingyan previously served as the Director of the Secretariat and Administration Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, and was among the first batch of Chinese torchbearers to participate in the relay of the Beijing Olympic torch ignited in Greece following the torch lighting ceremony in 2008.
In 2008, Beijing Daily reported that Wang Mingyan had been involved in the bidding process for the 2008 Beijing Olympics since 1999. His roles included handling financial tasks in the Beijing Olympic Bid Committee, leading donation efforts at the establishment of the Organizing Committee, and later managing logistics and administrative work.
In February 2017, the General Administration of Sports of China announced a series of personnel appointments, in which Wang Mingyan was promoted from the Market Department Director of the Sports Equipment Center to the Deputy Director position. He also concurrently served as the Deputy Minister of Market Development at the Chinese Olympic Committee.
In August 2022, Wang Mingyan retired due to reaching the retirement age. After retirement, he assumed the position of Vice Chairman of the National Youth Sports Federation.
Following the downfall of Jiao Zhongwen, the former Director of the General Administration of Sports, the anti-corruption efforts within the Chinese sports system have persisted. Previously, several direct subordinates of Jiao Zhongwen have been investigated, including Hu Guangyu, former Deputy Director of the Political and Legal Affairs Department of the General Administration of Sports; Ni Huizhong, former Director of the Winter Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sports; Liu Ai, former Chairman of the China Rowing Association and the China Canoeing Association; and Cao Weidong, former Director of the Cadre Training Center of the General Administration of Sports. Both Liu Ai and Hu Guangyu held important positions in the Olympic preparation office.
