On Monday, March 16th, the United States Central Command released photos and a video of the B-1B “Lancer” bomber. The command stated that the B-1B has an effective payload of 75,000 pounds (34 tons) and has been carrying out missions in the Middle East in support of the U.S. military’s “Operation Epic Fury.”
The Central Command referred to the B-1B bomber as the “Bone,” derived from B-One. This aircraft model holds world records for speed, effective payload, and range.
The B-1B has a cruising speed of 1,450 kilometers per hour.
Currently, around a dozen B-1B bombers have been deployed to the RAF Fairford airbase in the UK for airstrikes against Iran, making up more than half of the U.S. Air Force’s B-1 “Lancer” fleet available for missions. Three B-52 “Stratofortress” bombers have also been deployed.
The B-1B bomber holds 61 world records recognized by the International Aeronautical Federation (FAI), covering various weight categories of aircraft, including speed, payload, range, and climb time.
This aircraft is a long-range heavy bomber used by the U.S. Air Force, designed to carry a large amount of conventional weapons to strike targets worldwide. Due to its speed, range, and significant payload capacity, the aircraft is considered a key asset in the U.S. long-range bomber fleet.
The B-1B is one of the largest conventional weapon carriers among all U.S. Air Force aircraft, capable of deploying precision-guided and unguided bombs.
The B-1B saw its first combat deployment in Iraq in 1998. Since then, it has been involved in several major conflicts, including NATO’s “Allied Force” operation in 1999, the post-9/11 Afghan War, and the Iraq War.
Initially designed to carry nuclear weapons, the U.S. abandoned its nuclear mission for the B-1B in 1994. By 2011, in line with international arms control agreements, the B-1B had been fully converted to carry only conventional weapons.
Some key features of the B-1B bomber include:
– Can carry approximately 3.4 tons of weapons, enabling it to strike multiple targets in a single mission.
– Equipped with advanced radar and navigation systems, allowing for precise targeting even without ground navigation aids.
– Utilizes variable-sweep wings, sweeping forward during takeoff and landing and back during high-speed flight, enhancing speed, stability, and maneuverability.
– Flies at speeds exceeding 1,450 kilometers per hour and altitudes over 9,000 meters.
– Has intercontinental range, capable of conducting long-range strike missions.
– Capable of prolonged airborne missions for patrol and target surveillance.
– Equipped with electronic warfare systems for detecting and disrupting enemy radars.
These features showcase the versatility and capability of the B-1B bomber in fulfilling its strategic roles and operational missions.
