Texas Education Savings Account Program “TEFA” has received over 100,000 applications from families in less than two weeks since its opening, setting a record as the largest school choice initiative launch in the history of the United States.
Governor Greg Abbott congratulated the unprecedented demand for this program, stating that it demonstrates the desire of families to have the ability to choose schools for their children. The “TEFA” program allows eligible students to use funds at pre-approved educational institutions.
This statewide education voucher policy with a total amount of up to $1 billion aims to reshape the way families utilize public education funds, sparking extensive discussions in Texas about educational equity, fund oversight, and long-term costs.
“TEFA” started accepting applications on February 4, extending to families of students attending private schools, homeschooling, and other alternative education options. The state government funds can be used to cover students’ tuition, purchase textbooks, computers, extracurricular tutoring, and other related expenses.
Governor Abbott stated, “Through this program, families will receive funds to send their children to the school that best suits them.”
The deadline for online TEFA applications is March 17. All Texas children residing in Texas and who are U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.
The program does not operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Families can submit applications at any time during the application window without affecting their children’s chances of receiving funding.
Governor Abbott highlighted that this program gives parents greater flexibility in choosing education for their children, aiding them in achieving academic success regardless of their residence or income level.
