United Airlines increases round-trip flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

United Airlines (United Airlines, abbreviated as United) announced its largest summer flight schedule in history at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday, January 27th, with a competitive edge over American Airlines (American Airlines, abbreviated as American) for boarding gates and premium passengers.

Headquartered in Chicago, United Airlines stated that this summer, the daily flight volume departing from O’Hare Airport is expected to reach a record-breaking 750 flights, an increase of nearly 170 flights compared to the same period last year.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby vowed a few days ago to “increase flights at all costs” to prevent American Airlines from gaining more boarding gates in 2026 and to safeguard the interests of United Airlines.

O’Hare Airport is one of the few major airports in the United States where two large airlines operate a complete hub network side by side. The airline with the most flights typically receives priority for gate usage and optimal takeoff and landing times. Therefore, increasing the number of flights helps ensure future development and enhances competitiveness for business travelers.

Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning for United Airlines, stated, “We are developing a flight schedule that satisfies passengers.”

In 2026, United Airlines announced that passengers can fly directly from O’Hare Airport to 222 destinations, including 47 international cities and 175 cities in the United States.

The company indicated that its investments over the years at O’Hare Airport have begun to yield results, with improved flight punctuality, reduced cancellations, plans to hire an additional 2,500 employees at the airport this year, introduction of Airbus A321neo aircraft, expansion of VIP lounges, and approximately one-third of O’Hare flights currently offering Starlink Wi-Fi services.

Industry data shows that the expansion scale at O’Hare Airport is currently massive.

Airlines for America stated that the seat capacity growth rate at O’Hare Airport this quarter is leading among major airports in the United States.

The average daily flight volume in the first quarter is approximately 25% higher than the beginning of 2024, and it is expected that the total daily flight volume during the peak summer period will exceed 1300 flights daily—an increase of around 250 flights per day compared to two years ago.

Some industry insiders are concerned that this growth model may backfire if an excessive number of seats flood the market, leading to lower ticket prices and profits. However, Quayle countered these concerns, stating that demand is growing along with the increased capacity of United Airlines.

He also mentioned that United Airlines estimates it leads American Airlines by about 19 percentage points in local market share and 38 percentage points in business travelers, the largest gap in decades.

According to Cirium data, United Airlines operates about half of the scheduled flights at O’Hare Airport, while American Airlines operates approximately one-third.

At the end of last year, a reallocation plan led by the Chicago city government allowed United Airlines to gain five additional boarding gates, while American Airlines saw a reduction of four gates. Following this, American Airlines acquired two boarding gates from the bankrupt Spirit Airlines and is expected to gain more gates as its flight volume increases.

American Airlines has been operating below 2019 levels post-pandemic and is currently working to rebuild its Chicago route network while also actively expanding. Over the past year, American Airlines’ O’Hare Airport route network has expanded to over 180 destinations.

This week, American Airlines has started selling tickets for new flights to Allentown, Pennsylvania, Columbia, South Carolina, and Kahului, Hawaii.
