Taiwan Criminal Investigation Bureau: 20 threatening posts on the internet, police have arrested 3 suspects

On December 22, 2025, the Criminal Investigation Bureau of Taiwan reported that in response to the intentional random killing incident by 27-year-old Zhang Wen at a Taipei MRT station on the 19th, resulting in 4 deaths and 11 injuries, the Criminal Investigation Bureau stated that there have been about 20 threats or indiscriminate attack posts and comments on the internet recently. A national task force has been established to investigate, and as of now, three cases have been swiftly solved, and three suspects have been apprehended and will be held accountable according to the law.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Republic of China released a press release on the 22nd stating that there have been several instances on social media platforms and online discussion forums of posts and comments threatening violence or making threats of indiscriminate attacks on the public, causing anxiety among many people and having a negative impact on public order and social harmony. As of noon on the 21st, there have been 20 such instances reported.

To effectively curb the spread of such rhetoric and minimize potential harm, the Bureau stated that they have integrated police agencies and established a national task force to address content related to threats to the public, spreading violent threats, incitement, or claims of attacks on unspecified individuals, taking immediate action, swift investigation, and legal prosecution, to prevent risks at the source and maintain social security.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau stressed that as of the 21st, three cases have been swiftly solved and three individuals involved have been apprehended, all of whom have been held accountable under the law. The cases that have been uncovered are as follows:

1. A person with the username “Threads” who posted “The original plan was inside Banqiao Station…” was found by the New Taipei City Police Bureau in Taichung City’s Qingshui District.

2. A person with the username “Threads” who posted “Someone actually did what I wanted to do” was found by the Taichung City Police Bureau in Zhongli District, Taoyuan City.

3. A person with the username “IG” who posted “Chopped people at Zhongshan but didn’t catch me” was found by the New Taipei City Police Bureau in Sanchong District, New Taipei City.

The Interior Committee of the Legislative Yuan of the Republic of China changed its agenda today (22nd) to present a special report on “Review and Enhancement of Social Order Maintenance” regarding planned attacks. Minister of the Interior Liu Shih-fang stated in a media interview before the meeting that as of around noon on the 21st, the Criminal Investigation Bureau has accumulated information on approximately 20 cases related to imitation offenses.

Liu Shih-fang mentioned that for cases where identities and locations in Taiwan can be confirmed, whether in Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung, or Kaohsiung, the police have continuously transferred them to the district prosecutor’s office for investigation.

Liu Shih-fang emphasized that regardless of whether the content is considered a threat or intimidation, it will cause significant anxiety and unrest for the public. Therefore, criminal police units across the country have been cooperating with the Criminal Investigation Bureau in the investigation of related cases. She emphasized that the police will not cease their investigative actions on these types of cases and will continue to pursue related prosecutions.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau once again appealed to the public not to forward or endorse suspicious posts or comments, nor to treat them as jokes, to avoid fueling panic and imitation effects. If any suspicious messages threatening or endangering public safety are detected, individuals are advised to immediately preserve screenshots, links, account information, and timestamps, and promptly report it to the authorities (by calling 110 or visiting the nearest police station) to safeguard public security and social harmony.
