According to an announcement released by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday, December 12th, Stanley is recalling approximately 2.6 million popular influencer water bottles due to potential “burn risk”. Stanley has received dozens of reports of burns worldwide.
The recalled travel cups were sold through various outlets such as Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, and other retailers and online stores in the United States between June 2016 and December 2024. The prices ranged from $20 to $50 depending on the model. These cups are all manufactured in China.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission noted that the recall includes all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel cups sold in the United States. The double-walled cups come in various colors including white, black, and green, with capacities of 12 ounces, 16 ounces, and 20 ounces, and are fitted with polypropylene lids.
The announcement stated that the threads on the lids of these cups can contract when subjected to heat and torque, causing the lids to come off during use, posing a burn risk.
Stanley’s logo can be found on the front and bottom of the cups. The following product identification numbers are printed on the bottom of the recalled cups:
Switchback cup: 12 ounces, product identification number 20-01437
Switchback cup: 16 ounces, product identification numbers 20-01436, 20-02211
Trigger Action cup: 12 ounces, product identification numbers 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825
Trigger Action cup: 16 ounces, product identification numbers 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957
Trigger Action cup: 20 ounces, product identification numbers 20-02034, 20-02746
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that Stanley has received 91 reports of product defects globally, with 16 reports coming from the United States. Reports indicated that the faulty travel cup lids came off during use, resulting in 38 people being burned worldwide, including 2 in the United States. 11 people globally required medical attention.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled travel cups and contact Stanley for a free lid replacement, including shipping,” the commission advised.
Stanley Company, founded in 1913, has been a favorite among hikers, teachers, and construction workers. In 2020, the company repositioned its brand to attract new customer groups with significant business opportunities. This led to the creation of Quencher in dreamy pink as the main color scheme, which became a social media sensation.
Stanley travel cups have been a hit online. In January of this year, a woman in Sacramento, California was arrested for allegedly stealing nearly $2,500 worth of Stanley cups from a retail store. The Wall Street Journal reported at the time that Chris Ciampa of the Roseville Police Department said when she was found by the police, her car contained as many as 65 Stanley cups. Ciampa mentioned the woman was arrested for theft and drunk driving.
