Scottish police confirmed on Friday (March 20) that a 34-year-old Iranian man and a 31-year-old woman were arrested after attempting to enter the HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland on Thursday afternoon. The base, also known as Faslane, is the core military restricted area in the UK where the Trident nuclear deterrent and all nuclear-powered submarines are stored.
According to an official statement released by Police Scotland on Friday, the two suspects were detained on Thursday (March 19) around 5 p.m. for attempting to enter the base, and the investigation is ongoing. A spokesperson for the Royal Navy confirmed to Fox News that the two individuals “attempted to enter the base unsuccessfully” and stated that due to the investigation stage, the military will not provide further comments.
Media outlets have revealed more details about the intrusion. According to reports from The Independent and the British news agency, the two individuals did not try to force their way through the gates but instead approached the base’s main gate to “inquire about entry.” After being denied access by security personnel, they were arrested for their “suspicious behavior” around the base.
The Sun was the first to report this incident and indicated that security agencies are assessing their motives, not ruling out possible links to espionage activities.
The Guardian reported that although the UK Ministry of Defence assessed the event as “not extremely serious” at the current stage, the arrest occurred against a highly sensitive international backdrop. Just about three weeks ago, the US and Israel had military actions against Iran, with the UK recently aiding in intercepting Iranian missiles and drones in the Gulf region, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations.
On the same day as this base incident, another national security case related to Iran also saw new developments. According to the London Metropolitan Police, 40-year-old British-Iranian Nematollah Shahsavani and 22-year-old Iranian Alireza Farasati appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on March 19. Reuters reported that they were charged with conducting “hostile reconnaissance” on London’s Jewish community, the Israeli Embassy, and other sensitive locations, allegedly on the instructions of the Iranian intelligence service.
Faslane base is home to all nine British Navy submarines, including four Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines, serving as the forefront of the UK’s national security.
