New York Vintage Subway Ride to Watch Opening Game of the New Season

New York baseball fans this year will have the opportunity to embark on a “time-traveling” subway journey. In anticipation of the opening games of the baseball season, the New York Transit Museum and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) are once again hosting the annual “Nostalgia Train” event, allowing fans to ride retro subway cars to Citi Field and Yankee Stadium to kick off the new baseball season.

According to official sources, on the opening day of the Mets, the retro train will depart from 34th Street-Hudson Yards at 11 a.m. on March 26, traveling along the 7 line to Mets–Willets Point station, directly to Citi Field. The train will feature classic “Redbird” subway cars, and fans only need to pay regular subway fare to board.

For the Yankees’ home opener, the nostalgic train ride is scheduled for April 3, departing from 42nd Street-Grand Central Station at 11 a.m. and heading straight to Yankee Stadium at 161st Street. One train will use the historic 1917 IRT Lo-V cars, while another will consist of the “Redbird” cars.

Officials introduce these vintage trains, preserved and maintained by the New York Transit Museum, retain rattan seats, looped handrails, and retro advertisements inside the cars, recreating the early 20th-century subway ambiance of New York City. The event attracts a large number of baseball fans and rail enthusiasts each year, becoming a unique activity that combines New York baseball culture with urban history.

MTA stated that through such nostalgic events, not only can the public learn about the hundred-year history of the New York subway, but it also adds a festive atmosphere to the opening of the baseball season. The organizers encourage fans to arrive early at the stations to experience this historically rich journey to the ballparks.
