Remembering Former Chairman Fang Xiurong of the Taiwan Hall: Former Premier Lai Ching-te Awards Commendation Order

In loving memory of Patsy Fang Chen, former President of the New York Taiwan Center and Artistic Director of the Young Lions Youth Orchestra, a memorial service was held on February 1st at the New York Taiwan Center, her second home where she dedicated much of her life. Patsy passed away suddenly on January 4th in New York at the age of 78. Despite subzero temperatures, hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects and reminisce about her contributions.

The Taiwan Center was filled to capacity, and the memorial service was also live streamed online. Photos of Patsy Fang were displayed in the venue, while the Young Lions Youth Orchestra performed several tribute pieces in her honor, creating a somber atmosphere filled with memories.

Mr. Lee Chih-chiang, Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, read out a commendation from President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Tsai Ing-wen.

Among the attendees were Congresswoman Meng Zhaowen, State Senator Liu Chunyi, State Assemblyman Branstine, City Councilor Huang Minyi, former City Councilor Gu Yaming, Judge Lin Kailun, as well as dozens of leaders from overseas Chinese organizations, students and parents, friends of Patsy Fang, and many others, totaling hundreds of people.

During the memorial service, it was highlighted how Patsy Fang dedicated her life to music, culture, and the community, impacting generations with her warm smile, boundless passion, and unwavering dedication. Apart from promoting Taiwanese and Asian voices on important cultural stages, she also nurtured numerous young musical talents, leaving a lasting impact beyond just her works and achievements.

Chairman Su Chunhuai of the Taiwan Center praised Patsy for her dedication and tireless efforts in supporting the center’s various initiatives. He spoke of her proactive nature, strong work ethic, and willingness to assist in advancing the Taiwan Center’s missions.

Prosecutor Melinda Katz of the Queens District Attorney’s Office commended Patsy Fang for her commitment to nurturing young musical talents, emphasizing the importance of cultural arts in education. Patsy’s daughter, Dr. Chen Jiesi, a opera composer, recalled her mother’s unwavering support towards her and her sister, turning her unfinished musical dreams into wholehearted support for her daughters, ultimately shaping them into musicians, educators, and composers.

Reflecting on his experiences, Music Director Chung Qiren of the Young Lions Youth Orchestra recalled joining the group in 2006 at Patsy’s invitation. He admired her courage and vision, citing the orchestra’s annual performances at Lincoln Center. Despite the uncertainties following the 9/11 attacks, Patsy’s determination ensured that the orchestra continued performing for 22 years.

Former President of the New York Taiwan Chamber of Commerce Lin Qingfu, President of the Greater New York Taiwanese Association Liao Shidun, and others fondly remembered Patsy’s support and encouragement in their endeavors. Her passionate involvement in community affairs and generous donations were deeply appreciated.

Patsy Fang was born in Taipei, Taiwan on May 31, 1948. She graduated from the National Taiwan College of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts) in 1968 with a major in piano, and later obtained a Master’s degree in Music Education from New York University in 1980. Starting in 1998, she served as the Artistic Director of the Young Lions Youth Orchestra. Patsy had held various leadership positions including two terms as President of the Taiwan Center, President of the Greater New York Area Taiwanese Association, President of the Greater New York University Alumni Association, and Representative to the United Nations for the Pan-Pacific and Southeast Asian Women’s Association.
