Residents in Changchun experience strong shaking during thunderstorm night

On October 29, there was thunderstorm weather in Changchun City, Jilin Province. Around 9 p.m. that evening, many residents of Changchun reported feeling shaking in their homes, on their sofas, and so on, describing the tremors as strong, initially thinking it might be an earthquake. The Jilin Provincial Earthquake Administration stated that a mine tremor occurred in the Erdao District of Changchun City that night.

On various social media platforms, many local netizens in Changchun posted that around 9 p.m. on October 29, there was a noticeable tremor in the city, with comments such as “felt the bed shaking” and many others expressing similar feelings in the comment sections.

Several individuals from Changchun mentioned on Xiaohongshu (a Chinese social media platform) that Changchun had experienced an earthquake.

According to a report by Jimo News, on October 29, the Jilin Provincial Earthquake Administration was contacted, and a staff member indicated that a 2.5 magnitude mine tremor occurred in the Erdao District of Changchun City that evening, with the specific cause still under investigation.

China Emergency Information Network stated that due to underground mining activities causing the different nature of layer rock above the mined-out area to undergo regular bending, dislocation, and fracture sinking processes, the phenomenon of releasing elastic energy stored within the rock layers instantaneously can create various sensations of tremors for people, collectively known as “mine tremors.”

Earlier on October 25 at 7:45 p.m., a 5.5 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 560 kilometers occurred in Hunchun City, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, Jilin Province.
