New York Fleet Week Opens, Public Can Visit Warships

The 2024 New York Fleet Week officially kicked off on May 22nd with more than ten ships sailing up the Hudson River against the current to participate in the annual “ship parade” and begin a colorful week-long event. Fleet Week will run until May 28th.

This year marks the 36th New York Fleet Week, with the theme of “Salute to Service Members.” The activities on May 22nd included the “ship parade” starting at 8 a.m. The participating ships this year included the USS Bataan, a two amphibious assault ship from Norfolk, Virginia, as well as several German ships like the FGS Baden-Württemberg and FGS Frankfurt am Main. They sailed up the Hudson River, passing landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty in Lower Manhattan, Battery Park, Hudson River Park in the West Side, The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at Pier 86, and ending at the George Washington Bridge.

Fleet Week began on May 22nd and will run until May 28th, after the Memorial Day long weekend, with an expected 2,300 Navy personnel participating. The public can board the ships, get up close to various military vessels, watch the fleet parade, enjoy military band performances, air shows, and experience military culture.

Apart from the aforementioned ships, other vessels participating this year include patrol ships from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, the USCGC Sturgeon Bay and Katherine Walker from Bayonne, New Jersey, the USS Marinette from Mayport, Florida, and the USCGC Calhoun from Charleston, South Carolina.
