Guo Meimei’s Weibo Account Suspended, Once Ignited Chinese Red Cross Scandal

Recently, the “first-generation internet celebrity” Guo Meimei flaunted her new Rolls-Royce on her Weibo account to show off her wealth, but just 3 days later, her account was shut down. Previously, she had caused a deep trust crisis within the Chinese Red Cross Society due to her high-profile flaunting of wealth, and had been imprisoned twice for running a gambling den and selling prohibited drugs.

On November 6th, the official Weibo account “WeiBo Hero” posted that user “GuoMei May Work Hard” had been continuously hyping up behaviors like showing off wealth and worshiping money, repeatedly promoting negative values, and using these as a means to monetize her online presence. For violating laws, regulations, and community guidelines, her account has now been closed.

On November 3rd, Guo Meimei flaunted her wealth on her Weibo account “GuoMei May Work Hard” by posting a picture of her new Rolls-Royce.

Video blogger and Weibo influencer “Pretty Silly Things” uploaded the aforementioned picture and commented, “Guo Meimei just posted a Weibo a few days ago showing off her new Rolls-Royce, and today she got banned, reason being spreading negative values like showing off wealth and worshiping money, so fast, even trending on hot search announcements.”

Guo Meimei was born on June 15, 1991, in Yiyang City, Hunan Province, and came into the public eye around 2011.

At that time, she as the business general manager of the Chinese Red Cross, flaunted on Weibo her luxurious villa, the Maserati, Lamborghini supercars she owned, and dozens of Hermes bags with her mother.

On August 3, 2011, renowned economist Lang Xianping interviewed Guo Meimei and her mother, where Guo Meimei admitted for the first time that Shenzhen businessman Wang Jun was her “godfather,” and the luxury car Maserati was a gift from Wang Jun. Later on, Guo Meimei’s mother admitted that Guo Meimei was Wang Jun’s biological daughter and a shareholder of “Red Cross Love.”

This incident caused a huge uproar, despite officials from the Chinese Red Cross claiming “Guo Meimei has no connection to the Red Cross,” the organization’s reputation was tarnished, public questioning the direction of the donations received by the Chinese Red Cross and its fundraising capabilities plummeted.

Furthermore, Guo Meimei was imprisoned in 2015 for running a gambling den, released in July 2019. Just a year and a half after her first release, Guo Meimei was imprisoned again in October 2021 for selling weight loss pills containing prohibited ingredients, sentenced to 2 years and 6 months. On September 12, 2023, Guo Meimei’s Weibo account “GuoMei May Work Hard” suddenly updated after being inactive for nearly 3 years, indicating her release from prison once again.
