December Vintage Subway Runs Every Sunday, Reviving Retro Charm

New York subway will launch the “Holiday Nostalgia Rides” in December, allowing passengers to travel through time and experience the subway charm of the 1930s during the holiday season.

The nostalgic train will operate every Sunday in December from 10 am to 5 pm, running from 2nd Avenue-Houston Street (F line) in the Lower East Side of Manhattan to 96th Street-2nd Avenue (Q line) in the Upper East Side. Passengers can board this special journey by just paying the regular subway fare of $2.90.

The train consists of eight vintage subway cars preserved from the Great Depression era, which served on multiple lines from the 1930s to the 1970s. The carriages feature the popular Art Deco style of that time, equipped with rattan seats, ceiling fans, incandescent lights, rolling destination signs, and retro advertisements, which inspired the jazz classic “Take the A Train.”

Apart from operating during the holiday season, these antique trains are normally housed at the Brooklyn Museum, serving as an important testament to the history of New York transportation.

In addition, the museum will kick off its annual “Holiday Train Show” at Grand Central Terminal on November 13. The exhibit will showcase Lionel model trains navigating through a scaled-down version of the New York City scenery, complete with a miniature Grand Central Terminal, offering the public another nostalgic feast combining railways and festivities.
