New York China-US Friendship Association presented a total of $357,000 in scholarship awards on June 17 in Manhattan, New York City. Recipients of the awards, including international students, Chinese educational and cultural institutions, and community service organizations, expressed their gratitude.
The treasurer of the China-US Friendship Association, Yu Jinshan, announced that recipients of the “Bishop Yu Bin Scholarship Fund” in the first quarter of 2024 included students from New York Law School, Fordham University, The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, University of Chicago, Adler University, among others, with amounts ranging from $1,500 to $10,000 per student.
Educational institutions and service organizations receiving the Bishop Yu Bin Scholarship Fund include: the Fu Jen Catholic University Foundation in the United States, the Summer High School Internship Program, New York Chinese School, Ming Yuan Chinese School, UA3 Food Distribution Organization, Unity Meal Program, Global Peace Chinese Associations, and Staten Island Botanical Garden.
Of note, the Fu Jen Catholic University Foundation received the highest grant of $290,000, indicating a strong relationship between the Foundation and the China-US Friendship Association.
Li Panshi, Secretary-General of the China-US Friendship Association, introduced that the New York China-US Friendship Association was founded in the United States in 1950 by Bishop Yu Bin from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei. For over 70 years, the Association has been dedicated to assisting Chinese students in the United States in their pursuit of higher education. In line with Yu Bin’s wishes, the Board of Directors continues to award scholarships to nurture young Chinese talents, promote Chinese language education in the United States, support public welfare organizations in the Chinese community, and enhance the academic status of Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan.
Wang Bei, a director of the China-US Friendship Association, expressed hopes that foreign students studying in the United States could successfully complete their studies with the assistance of the Foundation and establish themselves in society.
Dr. Yao Wuge, Chairman of the Fu Jen Catholic University Foundation, expressed gratitude for the support of the China-US Friendship Association and outlined the use of the funds received: retaining school professors and cultivating future students specializing in chip manufacturing and artificial intelligence (AI).
Chen Xiaochun, a student from Wenzhou currently attending Fordham University in New York, received a $6,000 scholarship for the second consecutive year. She viewed the scholarship as a “grace” and a motivation, allowing her to focus on her studies without worrying about living expenses.
Yang Shuru, President of the Global Peace Chinese Associations, presented a “Certificate of Appreciation” to the directors of the China-US Friendship Association during the event.
Yu Jinshan noted that all scholarship awards distributed by the China-US Friendship Association come from the proceeds of the “Bishop Yu Bin Foundation,” with every penny of income being distributed. The next round of awards is scheduled for the fall season, with hopes to reach a total amount of up to $400,000.
