China’s top clothing street catches fire, suspect sets fire and jumps to death

On May 5th, a fire broke out at the Four Seasons Clothing Market in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, known as the “Number One Clothing Street in China”, leading to the suspect jumping from the building. This incident has sparked speculation among netizens.

A video circulating online on the 5th showed flames engulfing the Four Seasons Clothing Market in Hangzhou, with the fire burning fiercely, emitting bright flames and thick smoke. Many people were seen trying to put out the fire with fire extinguishers, while chaos reigned at the scene. People were heard shouting, “Call security, call security…”

Another video depicted what appeared to be the arsonist jumping from a building and perishing. A person was seen lying in the atrium on the first floor of the mall.

On the 5th, the Hangzhou police announced that the Four Seasons Clothing Market fire was a criminal case involving a 47-year-old man named He Mouqiang from Hunan province. The man allegedly set clothes on fire at a booth on the 2nd floor of a clothing market on Hanghai Road before jumping from the 6th floor of a nearby market.

The Four Seasons Clothing Market is one of the largest clothing wholesale distribution centers in Hangzhou, known as the “Number One Clothing Street in China.” The market brings together over 1,200 clothing manufacturing enterprises and more than 900 clothing brands/trademarks, covering various types of ready-to-wear apparel.

Following the incident, internet users have been speculating on the reasons for the man’s suicide by jumping. Some speculate that it might have been due to financial difficulties and immense pressure leading him to start the fire and ultimately jump. However, there are also rumors circulating online suggesting that He set his shop on fire due to “emotional disputes”.
