Authorities reported that on Sunday evening (November 9), a bus overturned in the San Bernardino Mountains area of California, resulting in 20 people being sent to the hospital for treatment, with 3 of them sustaining serious injuries.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department stated that the bus, carrying 36 people including the driver, overturned around 9 p.m. on Sunday near Running Springs on State Route 330, about 70 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
According to fire officials, the passengers included adults and teenagers, with only minor injuries reported for those who were not hospitalized.
In a statement, the fire department mentioned that when rescue personnel arrived at the scene, they found the bus flipped over and passengers escaping through the windows on the roof to safety.
A total of 26 patients received treatment, including 3 seriously injured individuals. Out of these, 20 were transported to local hospitals, all via ground ambulance, as stated in the release.
Officials said that the bus was descending from a camp near the small community of Angelus Oaks in the San Bernardino Mountains, heading back to Orange County when the incident occurred.
The fire department confirmed that there was no fire at the scene and no hazardous materials were leaked.
State Route 330 is a two-lane highway that winds through forested areas near Running Springs at an elevation of approximately 6,100 feet.
The investigation into the accident is being led by the California Highway Patrol, with the roadway briefly closed in both directions, but has since been reopened on Monday morning.
