Suzhou Deputy Mayor Tang Xiaodong Arrested; Showed Publicly a Week Ago

On November 7th, it was officially reported that Tang Xiaodong, a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, and the Deputy Mayor, has been placed under investigation. Just a week before, Tang Xiaodong had made a public appearance.

According to information from the Jiangsu Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision, Tang Xiaodong is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law. He was born in March 1969, started working in August 1991, and joined the CCP in April 1999. Tang Xiaodong held positions as a member of the Standing Committee of the CCP in Suzhou City, Deputy Mayor of the city, member of the Party committee, and Deputy Director of the Suzhou Port Authority.

Following the announcement of Tang Xiaodong’s investigation, the official website of the Suzhou City government promptly deleted his personal information on the morning of November 7th.

Public reports indicate that on October 30th, Tang Xiaodong attended the “Suzhou Day on Campus” national autumn recruitment event for universities in Jinan, Shandong, where he delivered a speech.

Tang Xiaodong began serving as a member of the Standing Committee of the Suzhou City Committee in 2022, as well as Deputy Mayor of the city, member of the Party committee, and also held the additional position of Deputy Director of the Suzhou Port Authority.

Suzhou is known as the “strongest prefecture-level city in China.” Before his fall from grace, within the leadership division of the Suzhou City government, Tang Xiaodong was responsible for ecological civilization construction, open economic work, commerce, ports, free trade zones, development zones, prevention and control of Taihu Lake water pollution, water resources management, and urban river water environmental management. He was also in charge of the Suzhou Municipal Ecological Environment Bureau (Taihu Lake Water Pollution Control Office), Municipal Water Resources Bureau, Municipal Commerce Bureau (Port Office, China Cross-Border E-Commerce Comprehensive Trial Zone Office), and the Port and Navigation Group, including liaising with the Taicang Port, Municipal Trade and Promotion Association, Customs, and the Municipal Salt Industry Company.

In July of this year, the fifth inspection team of the CCP Central Committee conducted an inspection in Jiangsu Province, staying in the area for about two and a half months.
