Tropical Storm “Swordfish” hits northern Thailand, causing 5 deaths and 7 missing.

Thailand’s disaster management department announced on Thursday (August 28) that tropical storm “Kajiki” had triggered heavy rain and landslides in the northern part of the country, resulting in at least 5 deaths and 7 people missing.

“Kajiki” had earlier made landfall in Vietnam as a typhoon earlier this week. The Vietnamese government stated on Wednesday that the storm had claimed 7 lives and submerged over 10,000 households and offices, as well as 86 hectares of rice fields and crops.

In Thailand, floods and landslides have severely affected 12 provinces in the north and northeast, including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Mae Hong Son, impacting over 6,300 people and 1,800 households.

The Thai Ministry of Interior reported that 4 people died in landslides in Chiang Mai, while another person drowned in Mae Hong Son. In Chiang Mai, 15 people were injured, with 5 being buried by landslides and 2 swept away by floods.

As of Thursday, the Ministry of Interior stated that floods were still raging in 8 provinces, with nearly 6,000 people and 1,600 households still affected.

This disaster marks the second time this year that Thailand’s northern regions have been severely impacted by storms. In June, Typhoon “Wutip” had passed through southern China before entering northern Thailand, causing significant damage.
