Issuing bonuses to mothers for giving birth? Trump: Good idea

The White House is reportedly exploring ways to increase the birth rate in the United States, including a proposal to provide bonuses to mothers for giving birth. President Trump stated to reporters on Tuesday (April 22) that he thinks it’s a good idea.

According to the Congressional Hill, on Tuesday afternoon, media questioned Trump about whether he was considering offering bonuses to mothers for childbirth. Earlier reports suggested that the Trump administration had considered a similar proposal to provide up to $5,000 in cash to mothers after giving birth.

“This sounds like a good idea,” Trump briefly replied before moving on to another question.

ABC News reported that as the U.S. birth rate continues to decline for several years, external groups focused on increasing the national birth rate have been advising the White House on strategies to convince people to marry and have children.

One proposal submitted to White House advisors is to provide a $5,000 “baby bonus” to every American mother who gives birth.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavit, responding to ABC’s questions, stated that Trump is taking significant actions to leave a better country for the next generation.

“The president hopes that America can allow all children to grow up safely and achieve the American dream,” she said. “As a mother, I am proud to work for such a president.”

Vice President J.D. Vance is also making efforts to promote childbearing in American families. During the 2024 election, Vance proposed expanding child tax credits and hoped to see a $5,000 child tax credit for each child. However, this would require congressional approval for feasibility.

Billionaire Elon Musk has issued a stern warning on the continuous decline in the U.S. birth rate. At 2 a.m. on Wednesday, he posted on the social media platform X, stating, “Low birth rates will end human civilization.”

Previous data shared by netizens from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics shows that the number of births in the United States dropped to 3.596 million in 2023, the lowest since 1979. Since 2008, the total fertility rate in the U.S. has on average decreased by 1% each year.

As the CEO of multiple giant companies such as Tesla and SpaceX, Musk has invested millions of dollars to support research in the field of reproduction and population. It is worth noting that the 53-year-old Musk has 13 children.
