“A 59-year-old mother was hospitalized after being hit by luggage on a flight with Hainan Airlines,” recently, Sun Wen (pseudonym) posted about his mother’s experience of being unexpectedly hospitalized after being struck by a luggage box while flying with Hainan Airlines, stirring widespread attention. Currently, no agreement has been reached between Hainan Airlines, the individuals involved, regarding the incident. On April 16th, Hainan Airlines responded to the matter.
According to a report by Modern Express on the 16th, on the 15th, Sun Wen stated that his mother flew alone from Shenzhen to Hanzhong on Hainan Airlines HU7739 on March 26th. “After the plane landed at Hanzhong Chenggu Airport, some passengers got up to retrieve their luggage, passing them down the aisle one by one. At that time, my mother failed to catch it, and the wheel of the luggage hit her shoulder. After being hit, my mother’s body leaned forward to the right, and her right chest hit the armrest. At that time, my mother held her left shoulder, saying it hurt.”
Sun Wen mentioned that there were no flight attendants present at the time of the incident. Upon disembarking, Sun Wen’s mother informed the flight attendants of the accident. “The flight attendants replied that they did not see it happen, and there were follow-up flight tasks, so they handed my mother over to the airport ground staff to handle. After the ground staff reported the incident, both the party responsible and the ground staff left while my mother was collecting her luggage.”
On March 27th, Sun Wen’s mother still felt unwell and went to the hospital with family members for treatment, subsequently being admitted for treatment. According to the hospital’s diagnosis records, she was diagnosed with degenerative changes in the left shoulder joint, mild bone marrow swelling at the distal end of the clavicle, and mild bone marrow swelling at the proximal end of the humerus. According to the diagnosis certificate dated April 9th, the diagnosis indicated left adhesive capsulitis, left shoulder cuff injury, and fractures of the 4th-7th ribs on the right side of the chest. Currently, Sun Wen’s mother has undergone hospitalization and surgical treatment for the left shoulder issue.
Sun Wen mentioned that after the incident, the family of the responsible party contacted him, apologized, and expressed willingness to make a one-time compensation payment. However, when she presented the medical records and informed them of the total compensation amount of 49,000 yuan, including medical expenses and loss of income, the other party did not agree and requested a reassessment of the compensation amount. Sun Wen stated that she plans to pursue compensation through litigation against the responsible party’s family.
On April 16th, Mr. Liu, a family member of the responsible party, stated: “The main focus now is that we do not agree with the costs and hope they evaluate the expenses reasonably.”
Following the incident, Sun Wen filed complaints against Hainan Airlines and the Civil Aviation Administration of China. On April 3rd, Hainan Airlines called and contacted her, stating that as it was the personal conduct of the passenger, the airline could not provide compensation. Currently, Sun Wen insists that Hainan Airlines should bear secondary responsibility.
On April 16th, Hainan Airlines told mainland media that they will assist in the subsequent handling based on the investigation results.
