Director of “Tomorrow’s Edge” requested by Warner Bros. to shoot sequel.

It has been ten years since the science fiction movie “Edge of Tomorrow,” starring Tom Cruise (also known as “Tom Cruise”) and Emily Blunt, was released. The director of the film, Doug Liman, recently revealed that Warner Bros. has been continuously inquiring about when he will make a sequel to “Edge of Tomorrow.”

According to Box Office Mojo, the production budget of “Edge of Tomorrow” in 2014 was $178 million. Although the film received high praise from both critics and audiences, with 91% and 90% ratings respectively on the review site Rotten Tomatoes, its global box office revenue was only $370 million. Adjusted for inflation, this amounts to around $490 million, as reported by ScreenRant. With Tom Cruise and Warner Bros. entering into an exclusive agreement earlier this year, the chances of the sequel “Edge of Tomorrow 2” being made have significantly increased.

On the 21st, director Doug Liman hinted to Total Film that a sequel to “Edge of Tomorrow” may be in the works. He said, “I think the best compliment a movie can have is that everyone wants it to have a sequel. ‘Road House’ has a strong demand for a sequel. And with ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ Warner Bros. keeps asking: Can you make another movie like this? There’s no better compliment.”

“Edge of Tomorrow” marked the last film collaboration between Tom Cruise and Warner Bros., after which he focused primarily on filming for Paramount Pictures. The story of “Edge of Tomorrow” revolves around Colonel Cage (played by Tom Cruise) teaming up with a special forces female warrior (played by Emily Blunt) to save Earth when alien beings launch an attack threatening to destroy humanity.

Tom Cruise’s performance in “Edge of Tomorrow” may have presented a different side of him compared to the adventurous characters seen in the “Mission: Impossible” and “Jack Reacher” series. Director Liman initially had reservations about offering Cruise the role of Colonel Cage, as in the film, the character commander brands him as a deserter and sends him to the battlefield.

Liman stated, “When I proposed it to him, I didn’t know if he would give up on this movie: What if we shape his character into a coward? This would completely go against Tom Cruise’s image.” Fortunately, Tom Cruise later wholeheartedly immersed himself in the role, and the film was well-received by many viewers.

As of now, Warner Bros. has not officially announced any news regarding the sequel to “Edge of Tomorrow.” However, according to Deadline, Tom Cruise is already working on a new movie with Warner Bros., directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who won the Oscar for Best Director for “The Revenant” in 2015.
