Hot Spring with 60°C Water Emerges from a Well in Shaanxi, Villagers Worry about Geological Anomalies

On January 27th, a hot spring suddenly burst out of a well in a village in Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province, with the water reaching a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius, causing concern among the villagers. Currently, the area around the well has been cordoned off. This news quickly made its way to the top of the trending topics on January 29th.

A video shared by mainland Chinese netizens on the 27th revealed that in Wangpu Village, Fenghuo Town, Liquan County, Xianyang City, villagers were shocked to see hot water gushing out of a well with a temperature close to 60 degrees Celsius. In the video, steam could be seen rising from the water. The netizen mentioned that an electrician had already inspected the area and confirmed that the heating of the well water was not caused by electrical problems related to the water pump or other nearby electrical equipment.

On the 28th, the village party secretary informed Jiemu News that “the water from this deep well feels like it’s over 50 degrees Celsius, all the surrounding electrical equipment is functioning normally, ruling out the possibility of electrical leaks. The cause of the water temperature rise will need to be investigated by relevant experts who have yet to arrive. This kind of situation has never occurred before. Two days ago, we suddenly found that there was no water, and when we pumped water again yesterday, it had turned into hot water.”

The village party secretary revealed that the well was dug over twenty years ago at a depth of between 90 to 100 meters. Currently, staff from the county water conservancy bureau have been dispatched to the scene to investigate the cause.

An employee from the Natural Resources Bureau in Liquan County told the media that such an incident had not occurred in the area before, and they would report the situation to higher authorities for further understanding.

Despite the explanation provided by the Natural Resources Bureau, the phenomenon has raised concerns among local residents about the possibility of an earthquake occurring.
