On Tuesday, January 27th, in Arizona, a suspect involved in human trafficking managed to escape after being intercepted by U.S. Border Patrol officers. Subsequently, the suspect was wounded in a shootout with Border Patrol special agents and taken to the hospital for surgery. The suspect’s condition is currently stable.
Sheriff of Pima County, Arizona, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) stated in a press conference that the suspect is a fugitive who had previously been arrested for smuggling crimes but escaped from a halfway house.
A halfway house provides support for individuals undergoing addiction treatment or nearing the end of their prison sentences. This support includes life skills training to help them reintegrate into society and live independently.
FBI special agent Heith Janke confirmed that the suspect is 34-year-old Patrick Gary Schlegel, who is expected to be charged with assaulting federal officials, illegal transportation of immigrants, and felon in possession of a firearm.
Court documents revealed that Schlegel was sentenced to three years in prison in January 2024 for illegal transportation of immigrants and illegal firearm possession. He escaped from a halfway house in Tucson, Arizona, on December 15th, 2024, and was subsequently wanted by authorities.
The shooting incident took place in the desert area near Arivaca, approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the U.S.-Mexico border. This area is a common transit point for illegal immigrants, and tensions have previously arisen between immigrant rights advocates and Border Patrol in that region.
During the press conference, Sheriff Chris Nanos mentioned that earlier on Tuesday, Border Patrol officers attempted to intercept a vehicle driven by Schlegel. Several passengers fled the vehicle, while the driver managed to escape. Border Patrol agents later pursued the suspect on foot and engaged in a firefight that resulted in his injury.
Janke described how a Border Patrol agent discovered the same vehicle near Arivaca, where the driver abandoned the car and opened fire at a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) helicopter flying overhead.
Janke emphasized, “I want to make it clear that any attack on law enforcement officers is intolerable, and the FBI will continue to investigate those who harm or threaten to harm officers wearing badges.”
