Trump: Cancels Tariffs on Greenland Issue to Reach Framework Agreement

On January 21, 2026, US President Trump announced that after a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, a framework agreement had been reached on the Greenland issue, eliminating the need for further tariffs to be imposed on this matter.

The fruitful meeting between Trump and Rutte led to a framework agreement on the future of Greenland and the entire Arctic region. Taking to his social media platform, “Truth Social,” Trump stated, “If the proposal is eventually finalized, it will greatly benefit the United States and all NATO countries.”

As a result of this progress, Trump confirmed that the scheduled tariffs set to take effect on February 1 will not be implemented. Discussions on the Greenland issue are ongoing, particularly concerning the “Golden Dome” missile defense system. Trump mentioned, “As negotiations develop, we will provide more information.”

Trump also announced that Vice President Pence, Secretary of State Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and other relevant personnel will be responsible for the negotiation work, reporting directly to the President.
