New York State Department of Motor Vehicles to Upgrade New System, Services Suspended from February 13th to 17th.

New York State’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recently announced that it will temporarily suspend all office services, online transactions, and phone services starting at 2 p.m. on February 13, 2026, to kick off its first phase of a brand new technology system. The services are expected to resume on February 18, 2026, at the start of business hours on Wednesday. This system upgrade marks the most significant technological reform for the DMV in decades, aiming to enhance service efficiency, integrate outdated systems, and improve the overall public user experience.

The planned system update will consolidate hundreds of outdated applications into a single platform, enabling DMV staff to handle tasks more quickly and accurately, greatly enhancing the convenience of online transactions. Officials stated that this change will allow individuals to complete more DMV transactions from the comfort of their homes without the need to visit an office in person.

DMV Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, Mark J.F. Schroeder, stated in an official release that the new system has been two years in the making by DMV employees. Although there may be an adjustment period once it goes live, this new platform will deliver faster, comprehensive, and secure services.

To ensure a smooth transition of the system, DMV is urging individuals who need to handle important tasks such as driver’s licenses to utilize the over 70 online services provided on the DMV website before the system suspension. People can also stay updated on the latest developments and restoration notifications through DMV’s X platform and other social media channels.

DMV highlighted that this upgrade is part of the first phase, with plans for a second phase scheduled for 2028 to further enhance technological capabilities and service functions.
