Trump: Establishing Peace Commission Only After UN’s Failure to Quell War

On January 20, 2026, President Trump stated that the United Nations should be solving war problems but has not been effective. He mentioned that if the UN could do more, there would be no need for him to establish a Peace Commission.

The Peace Commission, chaired by Trump, is a crucial step in the U.S.-proposed Gaza peace plan to achieve the demilitarization and reconstruction of Gaza. The U.S. also plans to expand this commission in the future to handle other international conflicts.

The charter of the commission does not directly mention Gaza but sets out a broad mandate for this new international organization, aiming to promote stability, restore reliable and legitimate governance, and ensure lasting peace in conflict-affected or threatened regions.

“We have just established the Peace Commission, and I think this will be a great thing,” Trump said during a White House press conference on Tuesday. “I hope the United Nations can do more, and I hope we won’t need the Peace Commission. But the United Nations, you know, in all the wars I have resolved, the United Nations has never assisted me in any of them.”

Leaders of many countries, including Hungarian Prime Minister Orban, have received invitations from the U.S. to join the Peace Commission. Orban’s invitation letter posted online showed that Trump stated in a letter to several world leaders that the Peace Commission would “take a bold new approach to resolving global conflicts.” Some are concerned that the Peace Commission may weaken the United Nations’ leading role in conflict resolution.

Earlier on Tuesday, Tom Fletcher, the UN’s Senior Humanitarian Affairs Commissioner, stated that Trump’s Peace Commission would not replace the United Nations. “My colleagues and I are clear that the United Nations will not disappear,” he told CNN.

When asked during the White House press conference on Tuesday whether he wanted the Peace Commission to replace the United Nations, Trump replied, “It’s possible; I mean, the United Nations has not been very effective. I have great faith in the potential of the United Nations, but it has never truly reached its full potential.”

“The UN should have solved every war I have solved. I have never gone to them, never even considered it. They should be able to resolve these wars. And I think they should be allowed to continue to exist because their potential is enormous,” Trump said.
