On the evening of January 19th, a netizen posted that a truck in Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province rear-ended another vehicle, was intercepted by the police, and the driver refused to be arrested, fleeing the scene and hitting multiple cars and electric motorcycles.
In a video circulating online, a white truck was seen reversing on the road while traffic police attempted to stop it, but in vain. Subsequently, the white truck reversed direction and collided with several cars and electric motorcycles on the road, causing some individuals to be knocked down. After causing the accident, the driver even ran over the injured individuals a second time.
Another video showed multiple police cars surrounding the truck to force it to stop. The police dragged the driver out of the vehicle through the window and immediately restrained him. Photos provided by readers to Hong Kong 01 showed an ambulance arriving at the scene after the incident, with an injured person lying on the roadside covered in a blue plastic sheet, indicating a possible fatality.
On January 20th, a delivery rider who witnessed the scene told reporters that the incident occurred around 7 to 8 pm that evening. He mentioned, “Fortunately, I arrived at the scene a few minutes late delivering food; otherwise, I might have been in danger.”
According to the delivery rider, the incident took place at the traffic lights at the intersection of the Hongyi Market and the One Plus One supermarket towards Wanmin Plaza. Both lanes were blocked at that time.
“I saw not only people being hit but also multiple cars involved in the collision. One person riding an electric bike even lost their helmet, lying motionless on the ground,” he said. Several cars came and surrounded the truck, forcing it to stop, with a group of police climbing onto the truck, pulling the driver out of the window, and pressing him to the ground.
Regarding the cause of the accident, the delivery rider heard on-site that it was related to a drug smuggling arrest, leading the driver to resist arrest and start hitting people; however, the exact details were unclear.
Nevertheless, he also noted that there must have been issues involved since a normal person would not resist arrest to that extent. “The damages from hitting small cars, various vehicles, and causing casualties might lead to bankruptcy. The person repeatedly run over must have been in agony. At least two cars were scratched, not counting the police vehicles. This incident is even more extreme than the market incident in 2024.”
According to the police report, the incident resulted in two injuries, and the driver, Qin (male, 27 years old), was immediately restrained. The police reported that Qin displayed confused speech and abnormal behavior while the injured individuals were all sent to the hospital for treatment.
However, the delivery rider expressed skepticism, saying, “There were more than two people hit. The official report claimed two injured, but I don’t believe it. In a similar incident at a market here in September two years ago, they initially said no casualties, but it turned out that several people died. All of them were elderly; there should be at least three deaths.”
On September 4, 2024, an incident occurred in Gangkou Town, Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, where a small truck crashed into a market stall at the market entrance. The Zhongshan police reported that the truck hit a vegetable stall, causing injuries to the vendors who received medical treatment (with no life-threatening injuries). It wasn’t until a year later on October 14, 2025, that the Zhongshan Emergency Management Bureau released a traffic accident investigation report stating that three people died, and seven were injured.
