German multinational grocery chain Aldi plans to open more than 180 new stores in the United States by the end of 2026. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary of entering the US market, the discount supermarket is aiming to further expand its operations nationwide.
Aldi announced on Monday, January 12th, that with the opening of these new stores, the company’s total number of stores in the US will reach nearly 2,800 by the end of this year. Their established goal is to operate around 3,200 stores by the end of 2028.
As part of the company’s growth plan for the next five years, it will be entering the market in Colorado for the first time, while also continuing to expand into the western and southeastern markets. Aldi also plans to establish three new distribution centers in Florida, Colorado, and Arizona.
Aldi stated that this expansion is aimed at meeting the “continuing demand” from consumers for its simple and affordable business model.
Atty McGrath, CEO of Aldi USA, said in a statement, “Over the past year, one-third of American households have shopped at Aldi, and in 2026, we will focus on making it even easier for customers to choose Aldi as their preferred shopping destination. This means bringing Aldi to more communities, upgrading our website, and planning more distribution centers to ensure our shelves stay well stocked.”
Aldi operates with a simple business model, mainly selling own-brand products and reducing costs by offering a limited range of products in smaller stores. The number of staff allocated to each store is also relatively low.
The company reported that 17 million new customers shopped in their stores last year.
As part of their expansion strategy, Aldi plans to enter the market in Maine in 2026, opening their first store in the state’s most populous city, Portland. Once the Maine branch is operational, this multinational grocery store will have a presence in 40 states across the US.
In Colorado, Aldi aims to open more than fifty stores in the Denver and Colorado Springs areas in the next five years, supported by a new distribution center.
In Arizona, the company announced that by 2026, they will open 10 new stores in the Phoenix area and expand the total number of stores in this market to 40 by 2030.
Aldi also plans to further expand in Las Vegas, aiming to double the current number of stores by the end of 2030.
In the southeastern region, Aldi will continue the transformation of stores acquired through the purchase of Southeastern Grocers in 2024. They plan to renovate around 80 stores in 2026, with a total of over 200 stores refurbished by the end of 2027. Since the acquisition, close to 90 stores have already undergone refurbishment or opened.
The company also announced plans to launch a redesigned website at the beginning of 2026 to enhance service functionality.
McGrath emphasized that while expanding their store coverage, the company will still prioritize maintaining low prices as a core goal.
