In the glorious era of the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong inherited the throne from his grandfather and led the Central Divine Land into a golden age of Chinese culture. Renowned as an emperor for all ages, he opened the palace gates in the nine heavens, and people from all nations bowed in admiration. The music begins with a powerful motif symbolizing the military might of the Tang Dynasty, which conquered the world and defeated the Turks in the north. The following melodious theme portrays Taizong’s virtuous rule over the realm, setting an example for generations to come, much like the alternating themes in the music reflecting his profound impact on the people and the state.
The echoing drums depict the diverse atmosphere within the imperial court, while the erhu and pipa play exotic melodies reminiscent of the Western envoy’s tribute along the Silk Road, traveling thousands of miles solely to witness the majesty of the Heavenly Khan. The solemn tolling of bells illustrates the reverence and solemnity of the imperial sacrifices, with the ethereal sacrificial music articulating the awe of ancestors towards the heavens above. The grandiose finale signifies the composer’s innermost hopes for the eternal magnificence of the Celestial Empire to be upheld for myriad generations, preserving the brilliance of the flourishing era.
