On Tuesday, President Trump revealed that First Lady Melania does not enjoy his dancing during political rallies. While Trump often garners cheers from his supporters with his signature “Trump dance” at these events, Melania apparently does not share the same enthusiasm.
During a closed-door meeting with House Republicans on Tuesday, President Trump delivered a speech lasting over an hour, discussing a range of issues including tax policies and healthcare. He also touched on lighter topics such as dancing.
“My wife hates it when I do this,” Trump said. “She’s a person with great taste, right? She says, ‘This is not how a president should act.’ I say, ‘But I did become president.'”
The First Lady did not attend the event.
Trump frequently dances to the song “YMCA” at the end of his speeches, and on October 26 last year during a visit to Malaysia, he surprised everyone by dancing with the welcoming committee, prompting cheers from the crowd. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar joined in the dance as well, creating a lively atmosphere.
“I say everyone wants me to dance,” Trump told the lawmakers, revealing a conversation he had with Melania. “‘Dear, this is not how a president should act,’ she actually said to me, ‘Can you imagine Franklin D. Roosevelt dancing?’ She really said that to me.”
“I told her, ‘There’s a long history behind this that she may not know, because he (Franklin D. Roosevelt) was an elegant gentleman, even though he was a Democrat. Japan launched an attack. He was truly graceful, but he wouldn’t do this, nor would others,'” Trump continued.
The President explained to Melania the reason behind his dancing, mentioning that his supporters appreciate his not-so-elegant dance moves. However, his explanation did not seem to sway Melania.
“I told her, ‘They really like my dance moves,'” he said.
“She said, ‘No, they don’t like it. They’re just being polite,'” the President added.
Despite Melania’s disapproval of his dancing, Trump ended his speech by quickly dancing before exiting the stage, insisting that people enjoy watching him dance. “The atmosphere was very enthusiastic,” Trump said. “I wanted to show more passion.” He also noted that there were people watching him dance.
Although First Lady Melania may not approve of his dancing, President Trump remains steadfast in his belief that people enjoy seeing him dance.
