TVB General Manager Eric Tsang Rumored to Be Fired; Anniversary Celebration May Reveal Truth

Current TVB general manager and veteran Hong Kong star Eric Tsang, who has been in the position for 4 years, has been rumored to be on the verge of being fired multiple times. Despite his earlier denial during an event, recent reports suggest that he may step down from his role as general manager and instead collaborate with TVB as a consultant. The truth behind this news may be revealed at the “TVB Anniversary Awards 2025” held in Macau on January 4.

According to a report by “Hong Kong 01,” there were previous rumors that Eric Tsang would resign in November last year, and his friend, Alan Tam, also disclosed this information and advised him against continuing. However, following the conclusion of “TVB Anniversary Celebration 2025,” Tsang responded by jokingly dismissing the rumors of resignation as purely speculative and stating that he would continue to serve as the general manager, mentioning that he is still in the position.

Facing relentless media inquiries, Tsang replied, “One day I will step down,” and then added, “But not today, I’m not getting fired for now.” When asked about the expiry date of his contract, he hesitated a bit and said, “I don’t know,” emphasizing that he has no plans to leave TVB.

Exclusive information obtained by the Hong Kong “Sing Tao Daily” indicates that during the “TVB Anniversary Awards 2025” held in Macau on January 4, a special segment will be added to thank Eric Tsang for his contributions to TVB over the years and present him with a prestigious award. After receiving the award that evening, Tsang is expected to announce his resignation as general manager and assume the role of consultant.

In January 2021, Eric Tsang was invited back to TVB as the Deputy General Manager, with his primary task being to resolve the long-standing copyright disputes with the four major record companies. In September of the same year, he was promoted to the position of general manager, overseeing the overall operations of variety shows, co-produced dramas, and music production.

In September of last year, Tsang participated in the Chinese variety show “Ace vs. Ace,” where Chinese actor Tang Guoqiang questioned the financial status of TVB, sparking discussions on whether TVB was on the decline.

During the program, Tsang and Tang engaged in a lively exchange, answering each other’s questions sharply and providing entertainment value.

Tang Guoqiang first asked, “Some netizens say that TVB has been on the decline in recent years, do you agree? How do you see it?” To this, Tsang replied, “TVB focuses on content. Content is king, every work has its content. We focus on content, so TVB will not decline.” Tang Guoqiang followed up, “Some say it’s because of your tenure as general manager that problems have arisen?” Tsang retorted, “Don’t just rely on online news, most of it is fake.”

Some netizens pointed out that in recent years, TVB’s frontline artists have had no acting opportunities, some have turned to the music industry, holding concerts to earn extra income. Additionally, some netizens mentioned that some TVB artists frequently appeared on Greater Bay Area programs, showing awkward singing and dancing skills, making it embarrassing to watch. Moreover, an increasing number of Hong Kong artists are engaging in “live-streaming with sales” in mainland China, selling products in real-time through live broadcasts. Some even sell counterfeit goods, including Tsang himself, who was involved in selling fake mooncakes for the mainland twin internet celebrities “Crazy Da Yang Ge” and “Crazy Xiao Yang Ge” through their electronic product brand “Three Sheep,” leading to returns, investigations, fines, and being labeled as “detrimental influencers,” causing a significant impact on their reputation and online presence.

TVB, which went public in the 1980s, was once one of Hong Kong’s leading blue-chip stocks. The current situation of TVB, no longer as glorious as before, has put many celebrity artists in a difficult situation.
