On the last Sunday of 2025, December 28, members and supporters of the Chinese Democratic Party’s Western Branch gathered in front of the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles to protest and call for the immediate release of Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai, who is currently detained.
The theme of this protest was “Innocently Release Jimmy Lai, Expose the Systematic Crimes of the Chinese Communist Party”. The host, Yi Yong, pointed out during the speech that the Jimmy Lai case is not just a mere judicial dispute, but a typical example of the Chinese Communist Party suppressing press freedom, dissenting voices, and Hong Kong’s legal system through the National Security Law, revealing the operational mode of the systematic persecution by the CCP.
Looking back at the past year, Yi Yong stated that the Chinese authorities have used “security” and “stability” as excuses to suppress the basic rights of citizens, with a large number of dissidents, human rights defenders, and religious believers being oppressed. This stability maintenance mode has not only extended from the mainland to Hong Kong, but also further stripped Hong Kong of its judicial independence and press freedom, with the National Security Law widely used for political purposes.
At the same time, the threats and interventions by the Chinese Communist Party towards overseas dissident groups have repeatedly drawn international attention. Speakers believe that these phenomena are interrelated and constitute systematic human rights violations.
Zhuguo Jun, a member of the Chinese Democratic Party, stated that Jimmy Lai has been detained for a long time due to his insistence on press freedom and democratic ideals, which is not only a suppression of individuals but also a choking of freedom of speech.
“A society should not imprison its citizens for dissent, and certainly should not distort truth in the name of the law,” Zhuguo Jun said. “We call on the Chinese Communist Party to stop political persecution, release Jimmy Lai, and respect the dignity of the people of Hong Kong.”
The organizer of the event and member of the Chinese Democratic Party, Du Jiping, believes that the Jimmy Lai case reveals the systematic suppression and collapse of the rule of law by the CCP. He stated, “We will document this, and there will be a reckoning in the future. We will not remain silent. Persecution has not stopped, and neither will our protests.”
During the event, participants held banners, chanted slogans in front of the Chinese Consulate General, and urged the world to pay attention to and condemn the continuous human rights abuses by the Chinese Communist Party.
