3 Chinese Coast Guard Ships Harass Kinmen Waters, Driven Away by Taiwan Coast Guard

On December 26, 2025, the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration’s Kinmen, Matsu, and Penghu Branch of the Ocean Affairs Council of the Republic of China reported that three Chinese Coast Guard ships aggressively harassed waters near Kinmen Island amidst extremely poor sea conditions on the 25th. Despite the challenging weather, the Taiwanese coast guard maintained a strong law enforcement stance, dispatching boats to escort and prevent the Chinese ships from advancing further into Kinmen waters, safeguarding national sovereignty and ensuring national security.

According to a press release from the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration’s Kinmen, Matsu, and Penghu Branch, as an intense cold air mass passed through, the sea conditions in the Kinmen area were extremely rough. However, the Chinese Coast Guard disregarded navigation safety and brazenly raided and restricted the waters near Kinmen.

Around 2:30 pm on the 25th, the Kinmen, Matsu, and Penghu Branch detected a Chinese Coast Guard fleet formation outside the prohibited and restricted waters to the west of Dajin Island in Kinmen. They promptly deployed patrol boats to pre-position and respond to the situation.

At 3:00 pm on the same day, the three Chinese Coast Guard ships numbered “14605”, “14606”, and “14609” adopted a formation entry from the southern waters of Dajin Island into the restricted Kinmen waters. The 3 Taiwanese patrol boats positioned there immediately closed in for a one-on-one escort to monitor and deter them from further entering Kinmen waters.

Using both Chinese and English radio broadcasts, the Taiwan Coast Guard sternly warned the Chinese ships that their actions were seriously jeopardizing regional peace and stability, affecting maritime safety, and demanded an immediate course change. Due to the full-scale response by the Taiwan Coast Guard, the Chinese Coast Guard fleet eventually sailed out of the restricted waters of Kinmen at 4:12 pm that day.

The Taiwan Coast Guard Administration strongly condemned the Chinese Coast Guard for persistently harassing waters despite the extremely poor sea conditions, deeming it unprofessional and irrational behavior that disregarded maritime safety, posing significant risks to the navigation of vessels passing through the area.

The Taiwan Coast Guard Administration reiterated that guarding the restricted waters of the Republic of China, upholding national sovereignty, is their responsibility and mission. Regardless of weather conditions or any changing circumstances, coast guard units maintain round-the-clock high-intensity monitoring and response capabilities, holding steadfast in their law enforcement stance to defend national sovereignty and ensure national security.
