On December 24, 2025, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau, a Richter scale 6.1 earthquake struck at 5:47 pm. The quake had a depth of 11.9 kilometers and its epicenter was located 10.1 kilometers north of the Taiwan Taitung County Government (in Beinan Township).
The highest seismic intensity across Taiwan was recorded at Level 5 weak in Beinan, Taitung, Hualien, and Pingtung at Level 4, Kaohsiung, Nantou, Tainan, Chiayi City and County, Yunlin, and Changhua at Level 3, Taichung, Miaoli, Yilan, Hsinchu City and County, Taoyuan, New Taipei, and Taipei at Level 2, with Penghu at Level 1.
Following the earthquake, the Central Weather Bureau issued disaster prevention alerts (national level warnings) for Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Nantou County, Changhua County, Yilan County, Penghu County, Yunlin County, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County, warning residents of significant seismic activity in the eastern sea area, advising them to be cautious of strong shaking and to take shelter nearby by “lying down, taking cover, and holding on.”
