Papua New Guinea hit by 6.5 magnitude earthquake

On December 22, 2025, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea. The epicenter was located approximately 26 miles northeast of Goroka in the Eastern Highlands province.

Meanwhile, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Papua New Guinea on the same day.

GFZ stated that the quake had a depth of 66 miles (106 kilometers).

The USGS mentioned that the earthquake had a depth of around 68 miles and occurred at 10:31 a.m. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is 5:31 a.m. Eastern Time.

Despite the strong intensity of the earthquake, the remote location of the epicenter lowers the likelihood of casualties and significant economic losses. Therefore, the earthquake alert level is categorized as green.

According to the regional information from USGS, this earthquake occurred along the western boundary of the Australia-Pacific tectonic plate.
