Fuzhou: Car Speeds in Wrong Direction, Hits Multiple Electric Scooter Riders.

On December 22nd, a traffic accident occurred on Tingtou Road in Cangshan District, Fuzhou, Fujian. The scene was chaotic as witnesses reported a sedan driving against traffic, hitting multiple electric scooter riders. The reason for the accident remains unclear.

According to Xinjing News, government officials from Cangshan District stated that several people were injured in the accident and that traffic police have been called in to handle the situation.

Emergency room staff at Fujian Provincial Hospital (South Campus) mentioned that 5 injured individuals are being prepared for hospitalization, with none in life-threatening conditions. One female victim sustained leg injuries and requires surgery.

An eyewitness, Mr. Lin (alias), recounted to reporters that the driver first rear-ended a smaller car at an intersection, attempted to flee, then proceeded to drive against traffic and hit pedestrians. Mr. Lin described the scene as terrifying, especially witnessing the sequence of events.

Providing further details, Mr. Lin stated that the driver had to turn the steering wheel to enter the opposite lane, indicating he was conscious of his actions but perhaps forgot it was a one-way street. Despite attempting to reverse, he was stuck due to surrounding obstacles.

Mr. Lin mentioned that a total of five individuals – three men and two women – were hit, with two suffering severe injuries, including one with significant lower body trauma and a head injury. He speculated that the driver, upon hitting the first victim, was aware of the consequences but continued recklessly.

Describing the driver as a young man in his twenties, Mr. Lin narrowly avoided being hit himself, hearing a loud crash while he was focusing on his phone during lunch. He initially thought something had fallen from a nearby building.

Upon investigating and calling emergency services, Mr. Lin witnessed the aftermath with chaos prevailing at the scene. Video footage captured the sedan colliding with multiple electric scooters, causing the riders to fall.

Mr. Lin expressed his belief that the driver intentionally caused the incident, noting the driver’s deliberate acceleration in the video evidence. Others at the scene corroborated his account.

Reflecting on the incident, Mr. Lin remarked on the magnitude of the disaster, raising concerns about insurance coverage given the driver’s negligent and reckless actions. Over forty electric scooters were affected, a location typically used for parking these vehicles.

Regarding the driver’s decision to flee after rear-ending, Mr. Lin surmised that there must have been underlying reasons for his actions. He suggested the situation could have been less severe if the driver had remained at the scene.

In an update, Fuzhou Public Security Bureau Traffic Management Detachment reported that at approximately 10:28 on December 22nd, Ge (male, 29 years old) driving a small car collided with non-motorized vehicles on Tingtou Road in Cangshan District, leading to injuries for five individuals. The driver is currently under investigation, ruling out driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
