55-year-old man from Guangxi, An Fusheng (pseudonym), was admitted to the hospital due to a cough, but tragically passed away suddenly after just two days, amidst a bout of mania. As the hospital did not provide an explanation for the cause of death, the family has commissioned a forensic examination of the body. On December 16, the Health Commission of Guigang City stated to Cover News that they have initiated an investigation into the matter.
An Fusheng’s daughter, Ms. An, as reported by Henan Urban Channel, stated that on the afternoon of December 10, as there were no signs of improvement in her father’s cough, he accompanied by his wife, visited the Second People’s Hospital of Guigang City seeking medical attention.
“My father had been coughing for a while, and despite taking medicine for a long time without improvement, he wanted to get better quickly, so he went to the largest hospital in the area. At that time, the doctor initially diagnosed it as ‘community-acquired pneumonia (non-severe)’ and arranged for hospitalization.”
On the morning of the 11th, Ms. An received a call from her mother saying that her father’s condition had worsened. Subsequently, Ms. An immediately rushed from Nanning to the Second People’s Hospital of Guigang City. “The doctor told me at the time that it was a mild inflammation in the lungs, with some sodium and potassium elements missing in his body.”
However, by the evening of the same day, An Fusheng’s condition deteriorated rapidly. “After 6:30 pm, he became extremely agitated after taking the medication, running around the hospital, shouting, ‘Don’t give me sedatives, this medication is toxic.'” Ms. An immediately informed the doctor of the situation, but An Fusheng did not receive effective treatment.
Ms. An stated that throughout the entire medication process, medical staff never explained in detail to her or her mother the specific uses, precautions, and risks of the medications. “They just handed us these drugs and said, ‘Give them to him,’ without informing us of what the drugs were or their precautions.”
Ms. An also mentioned that her father’s physical and mental condition before his passing were good, and he had never had any mental health issues or shown signs of losing control.
On December 11, the family reported that An Fusheng’s condition in the hospital was relatively stable.
Late in the evening, past 10 pm, the family saw medical staff trying to resuscitate An Fusheng. “Later they said his breathing and heartbeat had stopped.” Tearfully, Ms. An said that An Fusheng was declared clinically dead in the early hours of December 12 due to unsuccessful resuscitation.
In the following days, Ms. An and her brother visited the hospital multiple times to communicate. “They were very indifferent, saying, ‘If you have doubts, go for forensic examination, follow legal procedures.'”
On the 15th, Ms. An mentioned that the forensic examination on An Fusheng had been carried out by the organization contacted by the family. “We are now waiting for the results of the autopsy, wanting to know how my father really passed away,” said Ms. An.
Ms. An’s concerns revolve around: why did her father suddenly lose his mind? Were the hospital’s decision-making and information regarding the use of sedatives adequate? And was the supervision and resuscitation timely and appropriate when the patient’s condition became critical?
On December 16, staff at the Second People’s Hospital of Guigang City stated that the matter had been addressed by the hospital’s medical dispute department and they “do not accept interviews.”
