Founder of Next Digital Jimmy Lai and three Apple Daily companies were charged under the “National Security Law in Hong Kong” for “collusion with foreign forces” and other crimes. The verdict was announced today (15th) at 10 am at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court (acting High Court).
Before the verdict, former Democratic Party Executive Committee member “Fat Boy” Edward Leung Kin-fai attended and was interviewed by reporters outside the court.
When asked about his mood today, Edward Leung responded, “I’m feeling calm.” He expressed his hope for the judges to show wisdom and allow Jimmy Lai to return home soon, take care of his health, and be released early.
Edward Leung also mentioned that he has “no expectations” for the outcome of the verdict and believes that it is up to the judges to decide based on their wisdom. He emphasized Jimmy Lai’s age of 78 and the many years the case has lasted, expressing his wish for the “old man to be released safely soon.”
Regarding concerns about Jimmy Lai’s health, Edward Leung replied, “I can’t worry even if I wanted to.” He reiterated his faith in the judges to make a fair judgment and hoped for Jimmy Lai’s early and safe release.
Former Chairman of the Hong Kong Journalists Association and former Deputy Assignment Editor of Stand News, Chen Long-sing, mentioned that he attended the court as a citizen rather than a journalist. He recalled reading Apple Daily since a young age and being a media worker, which made him particularly interested in the case.
Reflecting on the media environment of the past, he described Apple Daily emerging in a specific era, where Hong Kong media could offer a critical perspective on the country and had a fervent pursuit of democracy in China. However, he acknowledged that such conditions and environment are now in the past and unlikely to reoccur.
Chen Long-sing then discussed the case’s significance for the news industry, highlighting the clear message it sends to the media if there is a conviction.
He also noted that the media had made adjustments in their practices, careful not to engage in strong connections with foreign political figures. Chen Long-sing emphasized that there would be increased caution if there was a conviction.
Additionally, some news topics involve international dimensions, and communication with foreign think tanks or political figures might risk violating the National Security Law. He further underlined the importance of considering these risks, even concerning Taiwan.
Outside the court, activist “Long Hair” Leung Kwok-hung brought fruits such as apples and grapes but faced multiple inquiries upon entering the court area. She expressed her simple message of support and comfort to Jimmy Lai and his family, in the face of uncertain circumstances.
Leung Kwok-hung, a Buddhist, referenced the concept of “all things are destined” and accepted the present situation. She mentioned her plans to attend the hearings before heading to Tai Po or Sha Tin for prayers.
These statements and actions from those involved reflect the complex and delicate situation surrounding the trial and the various perspectives and sentiments it has elicited from the community.
