Mayor Adams criticized his competitor, former Governor Cuomo, for his scandals involving sexual harassment and nursing homes during a community event in the Bronx last Saturday. He did not hold back in his criticism, implying that Cuomo’s decision not to participate in the Democratic primary was due to knowing that he wouldn’t receive any votes.
“Listen, he comes from a prestigious background. His father was a great governor, serving three terms with excellence. But during his tenure in state government, he resigned,” Adams told the New York Post at the event. “Personal troubles should not be an excuse for resigning. In my own personal troubles, I stood up and continued to serve this city.”
The mayor pointed out that he did not resign when facing federal charges, unlike Cuomo who resigned under pressure for allegations of sexual harassment towards several former subordinates. Additionally, Cuomo’s mishandling of nursing home policies in 2020 is believed to have led to the deaths of 15,000 elderly individuals due to COVID-19.
“This is his (Cuomo’s) history, and he has employed the same tactics during my term as mayor,” Adams stated. “He participated in the primary and lost by a double-digit margin. He knew I would run in the election. So why did he join the race as an independent candidate?”
Cuomo quickly retaliated against Adams, stating, “He (Adams) withdrew from the primary because Democratic voters wouldn’t support him. I stayed in the primary, and 400,000 Democratic voters chose me.”
Cuomo remains steadfast in his belief that those who voted for him in the primary will also vote for him in November.
