The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, expressed concerns about peace in the Taiwan Strait during the 13th EU-China Strategic Dialogue. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China stated that the European External Action Service has repeatedly expressed concerns since last year, demonstrating a high level of attention to the situation in the Taiwan Strait.
Kaja Kallas and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi co-chaired the 13th EU-China Strategic Dialogue in Brussels on the 2nd. The EU’s statement after the meeting reiterated its adherence to its One-China policy when mentioning Taiwan.
Kallas emphasized the EU’s opposition to any unilateral changes to the status quo through the use of force or coercion. The EU also expressed concerns about China’s human rights issues and its multifaceted threats to Europe.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China pointed out that the Chinese Communist Party has conducted large-scale military exercises near Taiwan three times since May last year. Each time, the European External Action Service issued statements expressing concerns promptly, emphasizing the strategic importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait to regional and global security and prosperity. The EU has a direct interest in maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
During the meeting between Representative Kallas and Minister Wang Yi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China reiterated its concerns, indicating the EU’s high level of attention and importance attached to the situation in the Taiwan Strait. The ministry welcomed and appreciated this gesture.
In the future, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China will continue to strengthen cooperation with like-minded partners such as the EU to defend the values of freedom and democracy, uphold the rules-based international order, and ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.
