China Democracy Party’s senior member Mr. Zhou Junyi was arrested by Thai police at 5 p.m. on June 11, 2025 at his rented residence and is currently detained at Sutthisan Police Station in Bangkok.
The Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party International Alliance, Li Xiaolong, stated that according to reliable sources, Mr. Zhou’s arrest was carried out at the behest of officials from the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok. This is a blatant action of the Chinese Communist government enforcing the law within Thailand, seriously infringing upon his personal freedom and basic human rights.
Currently, Mr. Zhou Junyi is being held in prison without bail. Thai immigration procedures should be to take individuals to the police station, bring them to court for bail, either release on bail or deny it, but in this case, he was directly taken to prison by the police.
Li Xiaolong mentioned that according to other refugees, in the days prior to the arrest, several Chinese men were seen taking photos and videos near Zhou Junyi’s place, and on the 12th, they were arrested.
Before the arrest, Zhou Junyi had been working with Li Xiaolong and others on preparations for the Tiananmen Square Memorial Hall and the 36th anniversary commemoration of the “June 4th” event in Thailand.
Li Xiaolong believes that currently, Zhou Junyi faces a significant risk of being forcibly repatriated to China. Once repatriated, he could likely face political persecution, illegal interrogation, and even torture.
In 2015, Zhou Junyi was invited by Dr. Yang Jianli to the United States along with his wife to attend a Citizen Power conference. Upon returning to China, he was arrested at the airport and had his passport confiscated.
In December 2015, Zhou Junyi traveled from Yunnan to Laos and then to Thailand, where he applied for refugee status with the UNHCR but unfortunately was denied, leading to his 10-year stay in Thailand.
In October of last year, Zhou Junyi, along with “June 4th” refugee Hu Junxiong, started building a Tiananmen Square Massacre Memorial Hall in the province of Phetchabun, Thailand, attracting attention from the Chinese government and putting his family members in mainland China under threat. In May of this year, Hu Junxiong fled to Canada, but Zhou Junyi remained in Thailand with no place to escape.
Li Xiaolong stated, “We urgently call on the international community, human rights organizations, and governments of various countries to pay close attention to Mr. Zhou Junyi’s situation, take immediate action to prevent his repatriation, and ensure his safety and freedom!”
