Teacher who raped underage student released from prison and starts teaching? Netizens outraged

Recently, a netizen exposed online that a teacher in Liuzhou City, Guangxi, who had previously raped a minor student, opened an educational institution after serving his sentence, causing concern among the public.

On the evening of May 13th, screenshots posted by netizens showed a conversation allegedly between someone named Li and others, where he mentioned opening an educational institution and shared related posters.

According to Da Wan News, scanning the QR code on the poster revealed a shop named “Dream Education,” located at Guan Ya Yulong Bay in the Yufeng District of Liuzhou City.

The report mentioned that on May 14th, they contacted the netizen who shared the above information. The person introduced that Li had mentioned starting an educational institution while chatting with a student. Since Li had a criminal record, there were concerns that he might harm more underage individuals.

A search on the Chinese Judicial Documents website revealed that previously, the Intermediate People’s Court of Liuzhou City in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region issued a criminal ruling against Li, a teacher who engaged in a sexual relationship with an underage student, committing the crime of rape. His sentence was until November 30, 2024. The defendant Li was prohibited from engaging in related education and training work for minors within five years after the completion of the sentence or probation date.

Regarding the situation reported by the netizen, on May 14th, staff from the Yufeng District Education Bureau in Liuzhou City responded by stating, “We are investigating and verifying this issue.”

Community workers in the Guan Ya Yulong Bay area responded that they received a message from the local education department to assist in this matter, and currently, they have not found the educational institution through door-to-door investigations.

Some netizens raised questions: Does the statement “the educational institution has not been found yet” from the community workers mean that the institution is not operational yet, or does it indicate that it was not found during the investigation, with different implications for each scenario?

Furthermore, there were doubts about the specific direction of the Yufeng District Education Bureau in Liuzhou City in “investigating and verifying.” What is the main focus of the investigation? Is it to verify if Li has opened an institution or to confirm whether the institution involves underage education, and if his actions violate the court’s injunction?

Netizens also commented that “Can a person like this continue to be a teacher? Are teacher positions in short supply, or are there no capable individuals to replace them?”
