“Kirov-class Cruiser: the Peak of Soviet Violent Aesthetic in the Mark Space-Time”

In order to compete comprehensively with the US Navy and carry out long-range operational missions, the Soviet Union built the Kirov-class cruiser, the largest post-World War II cruiser in the world, in the early 1980s. It was the Soviet Union’s first surface warship to use nuclear propulsion, with a full load displacement of 24,300 tons. Equipped with a vertical launch system and a large number of missiles for the first time, the Kirov-class cruiser was once the most powerful surface warship in the world. However, the fate of the Kirov-class cruisers has been tumultuous. They have never fulfilled any combat missions – either retired and dismantled or lying in shipyards undergoing endless repairs.

The Kirov-class cruiser represents the peak of Soviet violent aesthetics, with its superstructure covered with various radar antennas and electronic equipment antennae covers. The weapons it carries are diverse, including a 130mm gun, close-in defense system, anti-ship missiles, and anti-aircraft missiles in vertical launchers, with nearly 500 missiles of various types on board. Furthermore, different warships are equipped differently due to the era of construction and modifications.

To strengthen the navy’s combat capabilities, Russia began modernizing the third Kirov-class cruiser, the Admiral Nakhimov, in 2012. After more than a decade of upgrades, this cruiser has been comprehensively upgraded with radar systems, electronic warfare systems, onboard command systems, and anti-submarine warfare systems. The Russian Navy has gathered its most advanced technology on this cruiser. The Admiral Nakhimov now possesses significant modern combat capabilities, especially with its ability to strike targets over a thousand kilometers away.
