“Father of J-20” Yang Wei Fired – Was it Leaking State Secrets, Retirement, or Corruption?
Today’s Focus: Yang Wei, known as the “Father of J-20” in China and the Vice President of China Aviation Industry Corporation, has been dismissed. Following the 13-year sentence of Hu Wenming, the so-called “Father of China’s Indigenous Aircraft Carrier,” another high-ranking official has fallen. The key question remains: was it due to corruption, leaking of state secrets, or simply retirement?
The recent dismissal of Yang Wei from China Aviation Industry Corporation has caused a stir in military circles. Yang Wei, a prominent figure known as the chief designer of China’s fighter jets, J-10 and J-20, often hailed as the “Father of J-20,” is now facing trouble. How can the hearts of both military and civilians in China not be anxious with the news of the “Father of J-20” encountering difficulties?
Today, we aim to answer two questions: What kind of person is Yang Wei? Was his dismissal due to issues of corruption, retirement, or something else? What will be the final outcome for Yang Wei?
Yang Wei is indeed a clever individual. Born in Beijing in 1963, he entered Northwestern Polytechnical University in 1978 at the young age of 15. Yang Wei has excelled academically from a young age, even participating in the college entrance examination during his first year of high school. The year 1978 was a crucial turning point for university admissions in China, marking the restoration of the college entrance examination system, where only exceptionally bright individuals could secure a spot.
Despite his outstanding academic performance, Yang Wei faced a setback during his medical examination due to color blindness, which would have typically prevented him from attending Northwestern Polytechnical University. However, the founder of the aerodynamics department at the university, Luo Shijun, insisted on admitting him. Luo Shijun, a graduate of the California Institute of Technology under the supervision of Qian Xuesen, can be considered a pioneer in Chinese aerodynamics.
After completing his master’s degree at Northwestern Polytechnical University, Yang Wei ventured into work at Chengfei, where he primarily dealt with flight control systems. For instance, he was responsible for the digital fly-by-wire control systems of J-10 and J-20 fighter jets. His career progressed steadily, and at the young age of 37, he became the chief designer at Chengfei. In 2017, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and in 2018, he began serving as the Vice President of China Aviation Industry Corporation. In the aviation industry, mentioning Yang Wei’s name is akin to widely recognized fame.
However, how could such a prominent figure suddenly be dismissed?
