The Sun Family Foundation has announced an additional donation of $50 million to support the expansion project of the Hoag Irvine campus, bringing the total donation amount to $100 million. This donation will drive the construction of the Sun Family Campus, making it the most innovative and comprehensive medical campus in Orange County. The Sun Family has also become the largest single-family donor in the “Boldly Hoag” fundraising campaign.
Hoag is a nonprofit regional healthcare system in Orange County, California, with two award-winning hospitals and seven major specialty centers. Ranked as the top hospital in Orange County and the only one to make it into the top ten in California by U.S. News & World Report, Hoag Hospital Foundation is dedicated to supporting Hoag in becoming a national leader in healthcare through charitable donations. The “Boldly Hoag” campaign focuses on enhancing patient experience, medical innovation, and building the future healthcare system.
The new campus, named the Sun Family Complex and expected to be completed in 2026, will renovate existing facilities and construct six new buildings, adding 155 inpatient beds and 120,000 square feet of outpatient space. Highlights of the campus include specialized emergency rooms for cancer patients, hybrid operating rooms, advanced delivery rooms, and professional facilities for cancer, digestive health, and women’s health. Additionally, the campus will feature green gardens and outdoor platforms, providing comfortable spaces for patients and visitors.
The building complex will include the Sun Family Campus Hospital on Sand Canyon Avenue and the adjacent Hoag Irvine-Sand Canyon Health Center.
David Sun and his wife Diana Sun, founders of the Sun Family Foundation, were co-founders of Kingston Technology and have long focused their philanthropy on education and healthcare. The inspiration for this donation came from Diana Sun’s mother’s positive experience while hospitalized at Hoag.
Diana Sun stated: “Our donation aims to harness the power of the community, as the Chinese proverb says — a tower is built one brick at a time, as long as everyone works together, extraordinary achievements can be made.”
David Sun added: “By supporting Hoag, we hope to provide healthcare professionals and patients with enhanced resources, benefiting the health of entire families and multiple generations.”
The Sun Family Complex will not only enhance Hoag’s professional services in cancer, digestive health, and women’s health but also introduce leading global medical technologies and clinical research. For example, Hoag has appointed internationally renowned gastroenterology expert and Medical Doctor Kenneth J. Chang as the Executive Medical Director of the Digestive Health Center. The center’s facilities, personally designed by Chang, will lead the future of digestive health care in Orange County.
Robert T. Braithwaite, President and CEO of Hoag, said: “The construction of the Sun Family Complex will further Hoag’s mission of providing world-class healthcare services to the Orange County community. Diana and David Sun’s vision and generous support will help us benefit more residents and promote the realization of healthy living.”
The early contributions from the Sun Family have inspired more community philanthropists to get involved. Since 2022, through hundreds of small donations, the Hoag Hospital Foundation’s “Boldly Hoag” campaign has received widespread support. Foundation Chair Caroline A. Pereira stated: “The support from the Sun Family is not just a donation but a belief. They have helped Hoag become a model of medical innovation and excellence.”
